OWEN PHILLIPS (Download
CV)
Born in the Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire,
painting drawing and making became a focus of life from early
childhood.
Having left school at 15 after numerous jobs Phillips studied
at Birmingham Polytechnic for a degree in Fine Art Sculpture,
Manchester Polytechnic MA and The Cheltenham Fellowship in Sculpture
1972.
A career as a part time lecturer in sculpture followed with personal
artworks produced in a small studio.
Towards 1999 a number of Artist in Residence posts and Educational
Workshops in South Wales led to a full time commitment to sculpture
with a number of large Public Art commissions in Wales and the
South East of England.
Since 2004 the artist has lived in Hertfordshire creating and
manufacturing not only public and private commissions but exterior
and interior sculptural furniture. The creative design element
is still supported by idiosyncratic personal painting, drawing
and sculpture.
"I make things in a wide range
of materials and scale. The activity of making is very important
to me. The tactile experience of sculptural materials with a visual
narrative, sometimes contextual sometimes emotional, provides
the framework for the things that I create".
